Day 1

Mumbai – Samrad – Sandhan Valley – Base Camp

Day 2

Base Camp – Samrad – Mumbai

Day 1

Mumbai – Samrad – Sandhan Valley – Base Camp

We report at 11:30pm (Day 0) at Dadar TT junction and meet our leader. Registrations will be done & we depart for Samrad (base village). The Journey is for about 5-6hrs and we aim to reach by 08:00am. Breakfast will be done en-route on highway (by own cost). Upon reaching base village a briefing & introduction session will be rolled by our trek leader followed by safety & technical regulations. We pack our belongings and we head to descend through the Canyon. (NOTE: The canyon gets cold & is filled up with big boulders, be vigilant all the while about small falling rocks & blind crevices). Follow the leaders steps & instructions for your own safety. The route will start from a small dense forest opening up in the canyon mouth where you can see huge boulders slacked up. After a walk of about 30mins into the canyon you will have a water pond to cross over which is waist to chest deep in winters and can be up to knees in summers (Depends on the rain in that season). After crossing the pond the canyon leads to a huge opening where one can’t see the route further down. The canyon opens up to the valley & one can see the entire valley ahead which makes us enter our first rappelling point of 100ft. The team will help you pad up for the rappel down & assist you in it completely. The trick is to walk backwards on the vertical rock face with your hands being the brake & accelerator. Once you finish the first rappel the walk for another 90mins & you reach second rappelling point which is 60ft. This one would be easy for you to finish as you just mastered the art of rappelling. As you descend more & more the valley keeps getting hotter & the boulders shorter. You can now see a green cover right in front of you covering the entire vistas guarded by mountains on all 4 sides. The last rappel of 30ft and you are into an open path cleared the visibility of the campsite. Another walk of 60mins & we are out from the canyon right at our base camp. The team would have reached the camp and got the lunch ready. Set up the camp, relax & soak into the green shining vistas of Konkankada valley. The campsite is surrounded by mountains on 3 sides & a huge forest cover in front terminating with a mountain range. It also has a small fall next to it leading into a pool (which is very deep). Take a little nap under some shade & rejuvenate for campfire. The group gathers around campfire and enjoy telling stories, singing or sharing experiences as we gaze at the night sky filled up with stars (unlike urban night skies). Well a hot soup is served around the campfire & dinner is ready to be served, locally made food nothing lavish but delicious as heaven. Walking for almost 7hrs/12kms the body needs proper sleep and rest. The saying of the outdoors “The best way to enjoy in the outdoors is taking a proper sleep”. Call it a day early and enjoy a good night sleep.

Day 2

Base Camp – Samrad – Mumbai

Wake up to the sunrise in the valley falling through your tent and refresh yourself with a cup of tea/coffee. Pack bags, dismantle the camp & leave no trace after we leave. Breakfast will be served hot & fresh (Poha/Upma/Similar). One must be wondering do we climb the entire valley back up, well no we don’t do that although that would be one heck of a climb. Well we traverse the valley around & climb through a dense forest cover from the ridges of the mountain. The Mountain is overlooking the Konkankada valley and we are aiming for the Plateau up. The trek uphill starts from a low ridge grassy patch leading to a dry deciduous moist forest which is open & much more relaxed to walk. Although it is quite open it can be very humid & challenging to walk uphill. The heat can be a big barrier than the boulder was while descending. The walk is comparatively lesser and can be covered in 4-5hrs on an average hiking speed. The distance covered will be approximately 8-9kms. There are 2 small patches of rock climbing which does test your endurance & agility of the outdoors. Upon clearing the climbing patch one leads up to an open view which is just breathtaking. (Refer Picture ->) While we wait there for a couple of minutes for a breather you can soak these memories and click some mind boggling images of the valley with the sunrise & its light doing magic in it. Well after a lot of hard-work, walking, laughing, eating & climbing we finally touch the plateau after clearing a small ridge of the mountains last part of the climb. Well it’s not finished yet. We still have to make our way to the base village – Samrad. TIRED!!! NAHHH!!! The view right behind you will leave you startled, as you witness the route that you just covered. Resume your walk past a small forest patch opening up to open farmland. The view now is absolutely infested by Rice fields. We shall reach base village by 12pm (ETA). CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Feel proud of what you just finished. Freshen up & Change while the lunch gets served. Hot & freshly cooked lunch served in a village house cooked on fire Chula has a different delicacy. Before we leave we thank our entire team of guide, cook & locals for making this experience worth remembering & touching your souls at the same time. “Often we reflect on ourselves as we wander more in the wilderness – N.A”. With that thought we board our journey back to Mumbai by our comfortable vehicle. The journey is about 6hrs drive with one halt for evening refreshments (at own cost). We hope you enjoyed the journey that you just embarked upon with us and we hope to see you soon as we bid goodbye. Our ETA in Mumbai should be 08pm.
